Nokia's Newest Smartphone

Sascha Segan

Today Nokia introduces its latest smartphone, a 1-megapixel camera phone that we can only hope will live up to the standards set by the much-loved Nokia 7610 in our hearts.

The Nokia 6682 (no, there is no rhyme or reason to the model number) is designed to be appeal to shutterbugs, but it has plenty of features for business users as well. It's a handsome, squarish candy-bar phone, with a large screen and a more typical keypad than that of the 7610.

Slide the back of the phone down to reveal the lens of a 1.3-megapixel camera with a flash. But that's practically de rigeur for a top-of-the-line phone nowadays. Ditto the easy-to-access RS-MMC memory card slot, capped with a handsome steel door.

What makes the 6682 special is its smartphone capabilities. The phone comes with picture- and video-editing software (yes, editing), and it can print directly to Bluetooth and some USB printers without the need for a PC. Since the 6682 uses the Symbian Series 60 open OS, it can also play MP3s, as well as run Microsoft Office document readers and a slew of other useful apps.

The 6682 is the first phone to support the new release of Nokia's Lifeblog, so users can actually blog from their phone. It allows you to post pictures, videos and text messages to an online timeline that you can either keep private or publish for your friends.

Business users will like the fact that the 6682 supports EDGE Class 10 data, which should get speeds of up to 160 Kbps on the Cingular network, running the Opera Web browser on your phone or hooking up via Bluetooth to a PC. As it's a tri-band phone (850/1800/1900 Mhz), it will also work in Europe.

Check back soon for our review of the Nokia 6682. In the meantime, see the 6682 up close in our slideshow.
